While it is still the beginning of July, some are looking forward to the fall… not for the cooler weather, but because October 22 is the day “Niagara Votes”. The opportunity to bring back (or usher out) local politicians is one not to be taken lightly and of course we urge every one to exercise that democratic right.
In case you missed it, the Region recently put out a public notice that they are holding a public meeting on our current Regional Official Plan, and the new one targeted for completion in 2021. This is your chance to offer comments or ask questions of our regional officials and provide input as to what the near and not-so-near future of Niagara looks like.
The Grimsby Heritage Committee will be sitting on July 4th (6PM @ Town Hall) and like the heat outside, there will be at least one HOT agenda item, the intention to designate 33 Victoria Terrace as a heritage property. As we wrote in our previous post here, there has been some controversy as to whether flyers from the NPCA that featured a full-fledged bio of Grimsby’s Regional Councillor may be considered campaign material. The Region will be hosting a “Shape Niagara” event tonight (Thursday, June 21) from 5pM-7PM at the Fleming Centre, Beamsville. This will be a public information session on the development of a new strategic plan for Regional Council.
Although many people feel like Regional Council isn’t listening it’s still important to show up when these opportunities arise. Please participate if you can.

There will be a Public Information Centre on the Casablanca and Livingston Environmental Assessments (EAs) being conducted by the Region.
The PIC will be open tonight (June 20th) from 5PM to 8PM at the Casablanca Winery Inn with a presentation at 6PM.
The EA on the Livingston Avenue Extension has been a controversial topic as it will examine whether to plow through the Greenbelt and Irish Woodlot with a road that most see as unnecessary.
With temperatures finally climbing, if you feel a need to beat the heat… Town Hall is always a great place to do so during the week. And this week will offer up quite a few opportunities to do so.

There was another great turnout for the Century Condos revised proposal (21, 23, 25 Main St. E. And 6 Doran Avenue) “open house” at the May 29thPlanning & Development Committee meeting.
The Town will be hosting a statutory public meeting at June 19th’s Planning & Development Committee meeting to discuss proposed changes to height/density bonusing in the Official Plan and Zoning By-Law.
It looks like there might be trouble brewing for Grimsby Regional Councillor Tony Quirk after some publicly funded flyers appear to be an attempt to campaign on the public dime. Even the CAO of the NPCA, a Board Councillor Quirk sits on, is seeking answers on this one.
