We have posted in our Events calendar a list of the All-Candidates Debates being hosted by A Better Grimsby. There will be debates for Mayor, Regional Councillor and all Ward Alderman races.

For those who might not have caught last week’s article and editorial in News Now, there was a focus on the upcoming municipal election debate(s). The Grimsby Chamber of Commerce has tentatively scheduled a Mayoral debate on October 2nd from 7-8PM at the Casablanca Winery Inn. A “meet and greet” with all candidates from the other races, will bookend the night before and after the debate.
With residents across Niagara becoming more aware in civics, calling for change and a sweeping out of Councils both at the municipal and regional levels, it comes as no surprise that there are five open mayoral seats in the Region. For some, it is often better to throw in the towel than suffer a defeat by the electorate at the ballot box.
It goes without saying that social media is playing an even more pivotal role in elections allowing candidates to connect directly to voters. Our upcoming municipal election on October 22 will be no exception and in this post and others to follow, we will take a deeper look into social media use.
Nominations for the 2018 Municipal Election closed today at 2PM and the list as posted on the Town site shows for some competitive if not interesting races. Notably Mayor Bentley did not re-file for Mayor and he will be handing over the Chains of Office to one of two known contenders, Jeff Jordan or Steve Berry.
We have skipped the more tedious details of Monday’s Admin & Finance meeting and decided to cut to the chase and discuss the “lame duck” council concept that can potentially befall a municipality in an election year.
While it is still the beginning of July, some are looking forward to the fall… not for the cooler weather, but because October 22 is the day “Niagara Votes”. The opportunity to bring back (or usher out) local politicians is one not to be taken lightly and of course we urge every one to exercise that democratic right.
It looks like there might be trouble brewing for Grimsby Regional Councillor Tony Quirk after some publicly funded flyers appear to be an attempt to campaign on the public dime. Even the CAO of the NPCA, a Board Councillor Quirk sits on, is seeking answers on this one.
Our good friends over at A Better Niagara posted an open letter from Ed Smith, stressing the importance of the battle for transparency and better governance in Niagara that is before us. But as with all struggles, they come with a cost.
While you may be getting calls from the big parties looking for donations ahead of the June provincial election, we say that you will get more “bang for your buck” by donating to ABN and changing our local political landscape.

If you thought the dire and questionable state of Niagara Regional Council couldn’t get any worse, well we have a surprise for you!
