We have been hearing it for months, even years that Grimsby will have GO Train service by 2021 and Niagara Falls will see daily service by 2023. Town Council and the Region have been blowing their (train) horn about this ad nauseum.
In the past year we have seen the idea of GO Train service in Grimsby as the “carrot on a stick” for many other projects in front of Grimsby Town Council and it’s committees. While the Region and Council may be rosy in their predictions of the sight of the green and white rolling through Grimsby to Niagara Falls for 2021, Metrolinx statements have seem to cast a cloud on that date. According to Metrolinx it would take a colossal amount of work, money and time to create the perfect storm to bring GO Train service all the way through to Niagara by 2021.
Gerry Chaput of Metrolinx stated:
“We’re working as hard as we can to try and meet the time frames that you’re looking at… it’s a monumental task to try to reduce that by two years.”
Erin Moroz, also of Metrolinx went further and stated:
“The agency is aware Niagara wants GO trains reaching Niagara Falls by 2021, but it’s simply too early to tell if that will be possible”
