While reading the Grimsby Lincoln News yesterday, we stumbled across an interesting article that discusses how the Town of Grimsby will try and pitch the town to Amazon as a prospective location for their new $5 Billion North American HQ.  It is expected such a facility will create about 50,000 jobs.

This would be great for Grimsby, but let’s look at the realities… almost every municipality in North America is trying to court the retailing giant and land this deal.  Amazon is no slouch, it will look for tax breaks and other incentives wherever it goes… much like it funnels it’s profits through overseas entities and a tangled network of subsidiaries.  Sounds familiar.

On a related note, is there the hydro and other infrastructure to support such a massive facility… we think not, and Amazon certainly won’t pay to build it.

A decision on this is expected in 2018 and probably well before that autumn’s municipal election.
