Know Your Rights: The “Freedom of Expression”

With the ongoing discussion of the Century Condos project, the letter writing campaign residents have taken up and the upcoming “open house” meeting on March 27th, we thought it might be an apt opportunity to explore a matter of a higher order… our Rights and Freedoms in Canada.

The Canadian Constitution, in particular the Charter of Rights of Freedoms ensures that those in Canada have certain protections and rights. For this exercise, we want to look at the “Fundamental Freedoms”  as guaranteed by the Charter:

Just a friendly reminder that there are two public Open Houses happening on Tuesday March 20th :

  1. 4 Windward Drive (Casablanca Inn) – Zoning Amendment and Official Plan Amendment
  2. Section 37 Planning Act – Height and Density Bonusing – Zoning Amendment and Official Plan Amendment

Just when you thought the buildings in Grimsby couldn’t get any higher, 4 Windward Drive is being proposed at 22 and 19 storeys.

Do you think developers should be able to get more height and density above what is written in the Official Plan in exchange for giving the Town a cash payment or “community benefits” such as a sculpture?

Niagara This Week posted an article detailing some of the election training sessions being held around Niagara.  Even if you aren’t thinking of running, these are great sessions to gain insight on local politics.

The Grimsby 40: Information Seminars March 21 & 28th, 2018

If you’ve been looking forward to October’s Municipal Election… you are not alone!  The Grimsby 40 is a collective of local residents looking to bring positive change and fresh faces to Town Council.

Along with A Better Niagara and Community Voices of Fort Erie, they will be hosting a series of seminars for those who are interested in bringing change and even running in the forthcoming election.
